STAFF TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT TECHNIQUES IN PUBLIC ORGANIZATION (A STUDY OF FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC OKO, ANAMBRA STATE)
Abstract
This study examined Staff Training and Development Techniques in Public
Organization in Nigeria using Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State as a case
study. It worked on the contention that the low performance of employees in Oko
Poly was as a result of the existing poor attitudes to work put up by the employees.
The study therefore concerned itself with the primary task of finding out the extent
at which management training and development Techniques has been able to
influence the employee's poor attitudes to work in Oko Polytechnic. Primary and
secondary sources of data were employed and the following objectives were
formulated to guide the study: The training method and techniques to be adopted to
improve the moral' of employees and productivity, the effects of training and
development of skills on employee in Nigeria, if training of workers on specific
skills rather than general training will make it difficult to retain employee with
specific skills during an economic depression in Nigeria and to ascertain whether
training and development of skills lead to fresh view points and ideals on brininess
activities in Nigeria. The findings indicated among others that the positive impact of
training on employees' work attitudes in Oko Federal Polytechnic is not sustainable
because trainees are returning system where there is poor condition of services which
results to low morale of the employees leading to poor attitudes to work. Based on
this, it was recommended among others that adequate motivation of staff through
provision of adequate incentives such as attractive salary and other improved
conditions of service, etc, is a major step towards getting the cooperation of workers
and making the positive attitudinal changes that come as a result of training
sustainable.
