Abstract

The increase in ionizing radiation has gone unnoticed in recent times, which excess adsorbing of this radiation can be harmful to human health. This study deals with the MEASUREMENT OF BACKGROUND IONIZING RADIATION AROUND FACULTY OF BASIC MEDICAL SCIENCES, FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OTUOKE, BAYELSA STATE. An on-site measurement of background ionizing radiation levels was carried out at the Faculty of Basic Medical, Federal University Otuoke, Bayelsa State. The measurements were conducted using a Radiation Alert Monitor 200 and a GPS device, covering 40 strategically selected locations within the Faculty. The measured background ionizing radiation (BIR) ranged from 0.010 to 0.018mR/hr, with an average value of 0.014mR/hr. However, the result shows that the ionizing radiation value within the Faculty is slightly above the standard safe limit as prescribed by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) of 0.013mR/hr. More studies should be addressed to assess the safety standards of this location.
