TYPECAST MALADY IN NOLLYWOOD FILMS: A ROLE INTERPRETATION OF KANAYO O. KANAYO IN LIVING IN BONDAGE, NOTHING FOR NOTHING AND BILLIONAIRE CLUB
Abstract
This study, titled “Typecast Malady in Nollywood: A Role Interpretation of Kanayo O. Kanayo in Living in Bondage, Nothing for Nothing, and Billionaires Club”, examines how Kanayo O. Kanayo’s repeated casting as a ritualist has shaped audience perception and influenced his career. Through data collected from adult respondents familiar with Nollywood films of the 1990s and early 2000s, the study reveals that Kanayo is widely associated with ritualist roles due to these films. Most respondents agree that this typecasting affected their real-life perception of him, often blurring the line between fiction and reality. The study concludes that typecasting in Nollywood limits actor versatility and significantly influences how actors are seen by the public. It recommends more varied casting practices and calls for audience awareness to distinguish between screen roles and real personalities.
