Abstract

Abelmoschus esculentus is a widely consumed plant for its nutritional benefits. The fruit of okra are often overlooked, but they contain a variety of chemical constituents that contribute to their health-promoting properties. They are used for culinary and medicinal purpose, the seed are 11 nutritional and have various health benefits. This study evaluated some effects of alcoholic extract of abelmoschus esculentus fruit on alcohol-induced stomach damage in Wistar rat. Twenty adult female wistar rats weighing 150g were randomly selected into four groups with five each. Group A, the control group was given rat feed and distilled water. Group B received 100ml/kg body weight of alcoholic extract of abelmoschus esculentus for two weeks. Group c received 4ml/kg body weight of 50% of alcohol .Group 4 received 100ml/kg body weight of alcoholic extract of abelmoschus esculentus and 4ml/kg body weight of 50% of alcohol for two weeks. The experimental animals were weighed weekly and the results were analyzed using one way analysis of variance (ANOVA).Animals sacrificed was carried using cervical dislocation and the stomach tissues were harvested and fixed for histological investigations. The statistical result obtained from this study showed an increase in the body weights of the experimental animals across the groups as compared to the initial weight but not statistically significant at p value of < 0.05. The changes observed in the stomach weight is not statistically significant. Histological findings revealed that the group that received alcohol only showed distortion in the stomach histo-architecture and the group that received alcoholic abelmoschus esculentus extract only showed normal stomach histo-architecture. The group that received the co-administration of both alcohol and alcoholic abelmosechus esculentus extract showed apparently normal histo-architecture. This study showed that alcoholic extract of abelmoschus esculentus fruit has protective effects on alcohol induced stomach damage. Key words: Alcoholic extract, abelmoschus esculentus, ethanol, wistar rat
