Abstract

This study examined the effect of deforestation on human health in Kaleri, Maiduguri, Borno State. The research aimed to assess the environmental, economic, and health implications of deforestation and to identify community-based strategies for mitigating its impact. Primary data were collected from 30 respondents through the administration of structured questionnaires, and the results were analyzed using descriptive statistics presented in frequency and percentage tables. Findings revealed that deforestation significantly contributes to health and environmental challenges in Kaleri. The majority of respondents indicated that tree loss leads to increased heat and temperature, poor air quality, flooding, and erosion. Furthermore, deforestation was found to contribute to desertification, reduce rainfall and agricultural productivity, and increase the prevalence of diseases such as malaria, cholera, and respiratory infections. The study concludes that forest depletion has severe ecological and public health consequences. It recommends the enforcement of anti-deforestation policies, promotion of community reforestation programmes, environmental awareness campaigns, and integration of environmental and health policies to enhance sustainable human and ecosystem well-being in Kaleri, Maiduguri.
