Abstract

ABSTRACT The rapid advancements in Internet of Things (IoT) and sensor technologies have paved the way for the development of smart home systems that can significantly enhance the comfort, efficiency, and sustainability of residential living. A key challenge in realizing the full potential of smart home systems lies in the integration and seamless interoperability of the diverse range of IoT devices and sensors deployed within the home environment. This paper presents a comprehensive theoretical framework for developing an IoT and sensor fusion-based system for intelligent smart home management. The proposed framework encompasses the core architectural components and design principles required to build a scalable, adaptable, and context-aware smart home solution. At the foundation of the framework is a multi-layered IoT infrastructure that enables the deployment and interconnection of a heterogeneous array of smart devices and sensors, including environmental monitoring sensors, energy management systems, security cameras, and user interfaces. A sensor fusion module serves as the central hub for aggregating, processing, and correlating the data streams from these various IoT components, allowing for the derivation of rich and holistic insights about the home's environmental conditions, energy consumption patterns, occupant behaviors, and security status.Underpinning the sensor fusion layer is a robust data management and analytics engine that leverages advanced techniques such as machine learning, predictive modeling, and anomaly detection to drive intelligent decision-making and automation within the smart home. This intelligence layer is further complemented by a flexible rules-based control system and a user-centric interface that empowers occupants to actively monitor, configure, and customize the smart home's functionalities according to their preferences and needs. The theoretical framework also addresses key considerations related to the security, privacy, and interoperability of the smart home system, ensuring that the deployment of IoT technologies and sensor-based analytics aligns with best practices and regulatory requirements. Through the integration of these multifaceted components, the proposed framework offers a comprehensive blueprint for developing intelligent, responsive, and user-centric smart home management systems that can significantly enhance the quality of life for residential occupants.
