THE ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN TREE PLANTING CAMPAIGN IN ADAMAWA STATE
Abstract
Tree planting campaigns are essential in mitigating climate change, reversing deforestation, and promoting environmental sustainability. In recent years, social media has become a transformative tool for mobilizing public participation in environmental initiatives. This study evaluated the role of social media in tree planting campaigns in Adamawa State, Nigeria, with a focus on its ability to promote awareness, mobilize participation, and encourage community involvement in afforestation programs. The research adopted a descriptive survey design and employed a mixed-method approach. A purposive sample of 150 respondents, comprising social media users, environmental activists, and community stakeholders, was selected. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics, including Chi-square. Findings revealed that social media significantly contributes to environmental awareness and participation. Platforms such as Facebook (90%) and WhatsApp (86.7%) were identified as the most effective in mobilizing tree planting campaigns due to their accessibility and interactive features. Visual platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok were also effective, particularly among youth, by promoting visually appealing environmental content. Respondents reported that social media not only increased their awareness but also enhanced community engagement and grassroots mobilization in afforestation programs. The study concludes that social media is a powerful catalyst for bridging the gap between environmental awareness and practical action in Adamawa State. It recommends that government agencies, NGOs, and youth groups adopt structured social media strategies, partner with influencers, and invest in digital infrastructure to maximize outreach and sustain community-based environmental campaigns.
