Abstract

The study investigated the use and effect of Computer Assisted Instruction Teaching Strategy (CAITS) on students' achievement in Biology. The study diagnosed and corrected identified students' weakness in Biology by comparing their performances after being taught with Computer Assisted Instruction Teaching Strategy (CAITS) and conventional teaching method (CMT). A sample of one hundred (100) students was drawn from a secondary school in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State, Nigeria. The students were grouped into Experimental Group (EG) and Control Group (CG). CAITS was used to diagnose the experimental group while CMT was used for the control group. Biology Achievement Test (BAT) was used as a test item to determine the achievement level of both experimental and controlled groups. The test items of BAT were validated and used for data collection. Analysis of data by ttest parameters were used to compare the achievements scores of EG and CG students on PAT. The findings of the study largely showed that the use of CAITS in teaching-learning process is more effective in improving the students' achievement and retention of learning concepts than the CTM in Biology classroom practices. The EG students displayed greater mean (34.62) in their pat scores against that ofCG (23.14). The test analysis also showed that t-calculated (3.43) is greater than t-table value (2.01). Hence, the null hypothesis was rejected. The diagnosis, knowledge and correction of identified students' weaknesses can strengthen the Biology teaches with necessary teaching competence, behaviour and innovation required to rescue the students
