Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the influence of indoor and outdoor materials on the cognitive development of nursery school pupils, with a focus on comparing public and private school settings. A total of 200 respondents comprising teachers, administrators, and educational professionals participated in the survey, providing insights into the availability and utilization of materials in nursery school environments. The research questions were analyzed and interpreted using simple percentage analysis, revealing notable disparities and trends in material availability and utilization across different types of schools. Drawing on relevant literature, such as the works of Adeniji and Adegoke (2016) and Mokoma (2013), the findings underscore the importance of providing stimulating and diverse learning environments that cater to the holistic needs of young learners. The results indicate that while public schools exhibit varying degrees of availability for indoor materials, such as building blocks, puzzles, and whiteboards, private schools generally offer a more comprehensive range of resources. However, both sectors demonstrate a commitment to promoting outdoor play and active learning experiences, with high availability of outdoor materials observed across all listed items. Based on the findings, several recommendations are proposed to enhance the quality of nursery school education. Firstly, governments and educational authorities should prioritize resource allocation to ensure equitable access to educational materials in both public and private nursery schools. Secondly, teacher training programs should emphasize the effective use of indoor and outdoor materials to optimize cognitive growth in nursery school pupils. Lastly, curriculum developers should integrate nature-based learning experiences into early childhood education curricula, promoting outdoor activities and exploration opportunities that enhance cognitive skills while fostering environmental awareness and appreciation.
