Abstract

This study examines elections and citizens’ participation in Rivers State with a focus on Etche Local Government Area between 2015 and 2019. The study investigates the level of citizens’ involvement in electoral processes, identifies challenges affecting participation, and explores prospects for improving democratic engagement. Data were obtained from both primary and secondary sources. The findings reveal that voter apathy, electoral violence, lack of trust in electoral institutions, and political manipulation significantly hinder citizens’ participation. The study concludes that strengthening electoral institutions and promoting civic education are essential for improving participation. Recommendations are provided accordingly.
