Abstract

This study investigates the effect of different electrical load types, particularly inductive and resistive loads, on the lifespan and reliability of inverters used in power systems. The research aims to identify the key stress factors that contribute to inverter degradation, including thermal stress, surge current, harmonic distortion, low power factor, and voltage ripple. A comparative analysis of reviewed studies was conducted to determine how these stressors influence inverter performance and time until failure. Findings from existing models and literature show that inverters supplying inductive loads experience higher levels of heat generation, current surges, and reactive power cycling, all of which accelerate component fatigue and shorten lifespan by up to 40 percent compared to resistive operation. Resistive loads, by contrast, maintain stable current flow and minimal temperature variation, resulting in longer operational life. The study also proposes optimization strategies such as improved thermal management, surge protection, harmonic filtering, and power factor correction to extend inverter service time. Overall, this work contributes to a better understanding of inverter aging mechanisms and offers practical insights into designing more reliable and durable inverter systems for residential and industrial applications.
