ASSESSMENT OF SOME HEAVY METALS CONCENTRATION AND PHSICOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS IN JEWELRIES
Abstract
Jewelry is viewed as a form of personal decoration or adornment. It is manifested as necklaces, rings, brooches, earrings and bracelets but can pose serious threat due to over exposure. Three jewelry samples Earrings, bracelets and chain were purchased from a local seller at oja oba market in Ado-Ekiti and subjected to standard analytical procedure. The samples were analysed for heavy metals concentrations such as cadmium, copper, iron, lead, and zinc. Iron concentrations range from 640-14990ppm, chromium (Cr) 1.184-3.855ppm, zinc (Zn) 6.100- 5200ppm lead (pb). The result shows that the jewelry items contain significant levels if highly toxic heavy metals which are in excess of EU standards. This can cause adverse toxicological impact on human health upon prolonged exposure or contact.
