2D MODELLING OF FREE AIR GRAVITY DATA OVER MKPAT ENIN, ETINAN AND ONNA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF AKWA IBOM STATE
Abstract
This research investigates the subsurface geological structures of Mkpat Enin, Etinan and Onna Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, using 2D modeling of free-air gravity data. The study aims to process free air gravity data over Mkpat Enin, Etinan and Onna Local Government Areas (L.G.A) for accurate modeling. Constructing a 2D gravity models of the subsurface structures in the study area based on the free air gravity anomalies will aid to identify and analyze subsurface density variations responsible for the observed gravity anomalies in the study area. Free-air gravity data was acquired and processed to generate a Bouguer anomaly map. The map was then subjected to 2D modeling using a forward modeling approach. The modeling results were interpreted in conjunction with available geological and geophysical data to construct a subsurface geological model. The cross-sectional profiles provided a detailed view of the subsurface geology in Mkpat Enin, Onna, and Etinan. The Benin Formation extends to depths of 0.9 km to 3.8 km, the Agbada Formation spans 2.0 km to 3.0 km in thickness, and the Akata Formation lies below at 5.6 km to 6.8 km. The undulating nature of these formations underscores the Niger Delta’s dynamic depositional and tectonic history. These findings have significant implications for hydrocarbon exploration, groundwater management, and geohazard assessment in the region.
