STUDIES ON THE PHYTOCHEMICAL AND MINERAL ELEMENT COMPOSITION OF TWO VARIETIES OF OKRA LEAVES
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Abelmoschus esculentus L. is popularly known as okra or ladys finger. It belongs to the Malvacee
family, native to Africa, and is cultivated in tropical, subtropical. The aim of this study was to
compare the phytochemical and mineral element composition of both short and long varieties of
okra leaves. The samples were collected at Giwa Barack, the leaves were tested for Tannins,
alkaloids, saponnins,, glycosides and flavonoids using standard laboratory procedures.
Mineral clement of both short and long varieties of okra leaves were also determined using
standard laboratory methods. The result shows the presence of tannins, alkaloids, saponnins and
I glycoside, while flavonoids were not detected.
For the mineral element composition, the Zinc content of short variety of okra leaves (0022mg g)
is significantly (P
