Abstract

This research investigates the hematological effects of different beverages on male Wistar rats, focusing on packed cell volume (PCV), hemoglobin (Hb), white blood cells (WBC), platelets, red blood cells (RBC), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), and mean corpuscular volume (MCV). Thirty male Wistar rats were divided into six groups, of five rats in each group. The rats in group A was administered one milliliter of distilled water, fed rat diet and water ad libitum. The rats in group B, C, D, E and F were orally administered with 1ml of foreign alcoholic wine, local alcoholic wine, foreign non-alcoholic wine, local non- alcoholic wine and zobo respectively for 28days. The animals were sacrificed and the blood collected in ethylenediamineteracetic acid (EDTA) bottles. The packed cell volume (PCV), haemoglobin (HB), white blood cell count (WBC), platelets (PLT), red blood cell (RBC), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCH) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) were analysed using mindray automated haematology analyzer (5 parts). The data were analysed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 22. The result indicated no significant difference (p>0.05) in Hb, wbsc, plt, mch, rbc, mchc and mcv of the beverage administered compared with their respective controls. The study has shown that oral administration of different beverages has no effect on haematological parameters. This research contributes to the understanding of how a different beverages constituent affects haematological parameters.
