Abstract

ABSTRACT The present study investigated the impact of solid waste disposal on soil quality of three major dump-sites and a control site in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria by collecting samples at four sample from the dump-sites. Results obtained during these studies showed that pH values ranged between 5.6 and 8.2, recording from the four sample with the highest average 7.9 on sample B (Trans-egbu) and the least from the control sample with an average of 6. Electrical conductivity concentrations ranged from 0.21 mS/cm to 0.82mS/cm in the entire research. Station A recorded the highest average EC value of 0.74Ms/cm followed by station B (Trans-egbu) with average value of 0.70mS/cm. the least in terms of average EC was recorded at uncontaminated site (control) with average EC of 0.33Ms/cm organic matter ranged from 0.47% to 2.23% in the entire stations. Maximum organic matter was found in station A which is an old dumpsite with an average of 1.95%. The second in terms of average organic matters was recorded on sample B with 1.90 %, while the least was recorded on the uncontaminated station with 0.52% of organic matter. The chloride content in the soil was highest in sample A. It ranged between 165mg/Kg and 213mg/kg in sample A while in station, it ranged from 143 mg/kg to 223 mg/kg. The least in terms of Chloride content was recorded at sample D (Control station) range between 53mg/kg to 74mg/kg The available nitrogen varied between 176kg/ha to 245 kg/ha in sample A, in sample B, it varied between 184 to 202 kg/ha. Sample C varies between 187kg/ha to 216kg/ha, while sample D varies between 108kg/ha to 140kg/ha. From the bulk density result, the average highest bulk density was recorded at sample A (Avu dump site) with 1.66g/cm3, followed with sample C with 1.62g/cm3.the least in terms of average bulk density was recorded at the uncontaminated site (control) with 1.41g/cm3. Particle size distribution showed that sample A had 2.5 uniformity coefficients (UC), 1.5 coefficient of gradation (CC) with 4.2 % gravel, 93.9% sand and 1.9%fine. Sample B had 3.00 UC, 1.4 of CC with gravel= 0%, sand = 95.5% and fine = 4.5%. Sample C had 2.4 of UC, 1.5 of CC with gravel= 1.2, sand = 87.8% and fine11% sample D had 3 of UC, 0.9 with gravel = 0%, sand = 94% and fine = 6%. The result of moisture content from the four samples showed that sample A had 15 percent moisture content, sample B recorded 9 percent moisture content, Sample C had 10 percent moisture content and sample recorded 6.3 percent moisture content
