EVALUATION OF HISTOPATHOLOGICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL CHANGES IN THE LIVER OF ALBINO RATS EXPOSED TO X-RAY FIXER SOLUTION
Abstract
The usefulness of x-ray fixer solutions is well-known to radiology departments but the biochemistry of its exposure is almost unknown. The five major functions of the liver are; filtration, digestion, metabolism and detoxification, protein synthesis, storage of vitamins and minerals. The liver is the main organ responsible for the metabolism of drugs and toxic chemicals and so is the primary target organ for many organic solvents. The aim of this study was to evaluate the histopathological and biochemical changes in the liver of Albino rats exposed to X-ray fixer solution. Twelve (12) albino rats was employed in this study, which comprises of 6 males and 6 females, and divided into three groups of four (4) animals each. The weight of the control rats was compared with the test rats and results obtained were expressed as mean () SD. Data obtained from the study were analyzed using independent sample t-test and one-way analysis of variance which was used to compare mean, values and considered significant at p0.05. Results show that rats in group A exhibited a noteworthy increase in body weight from the initial mean of 178.25g to the final mean of 216.00g. Group B also displayed an increase, moving from 156.25g to 175.00g. Group C, on the other hand, experienced the most substantial weight gain, increasing from 173.50g to 228.00g with a statistical difference (p
