THE EFFECT OF CURCUMIN ON COBALT INDUCED NEURO DEGENERATION IN THE HIPPOCAMPUS OF ADULT ALBINO WISTAR RATS
Abstract
Regular and constant exposure to heavy metals is & major concern for several medical complications. Cobalt toxicity from the industries and exposures in the feld of medicine has been associated with several neurological disorders, The current study is aimed a1 studying the effects of cobalt-induced neuro degeneration and microgliosis in the hippocampus and the moedulatory role of curcumin. The adult wistar rats were randomly grouped into 4 groups: which are as follows: The group 1 control, group 2 40mgkg of cobalt chloride only, group 3 CoCls (40mgkg) + Cwrcumin (120mgkg), group 4 CoCly (40mgkg) + Curcumin (240mg/kg)
Administration was done through oral route for three weeks. At the end of3 weeks, 2 animals from each group were randomly selected and sacrificed with the brain carefully removed and examined histologically to ascertain the cffects of the curcumin administered, Furthermore, immunchistochemical assessment of the expression of IBAL, and Histologically H&E in the hippocampus was carried out. In the CoCls group, the results showed altered neuro degenerative responses, increased expression of IBA] positive cells and the number of microglia cells, which led to microgliosis, In the present study it was observed that coball induced neuro degeneration and curcumin had anti-neurodegenerative effects. In conclusion crrcumin served as 2 defense mechanism and protected the hippocampus from cobalt induced neuro degencration and microgliosis owing Lo ils nenroprotective effects.
