THE PREVALENCE AND RISK FACTORS OF MYOPIA IN PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN IN ISOKO COMMUNITY, DELTA STATE.
Abstract
Myopia is one of the leading causes of visual impairment in children. An analysis of risk
factors for myopia is required to reduce and prevent this common eye condition. Among
school children, myopia has a considerable impact on participation and learning in class.
This study was undertaken to determine the risk factor for myopia among primary school
children. This was a cross-sectional study conducted on children to know the risk factors for
myopia. 550 pupils aged 5-15 years were screened from three randomly selected schools in
Ngwo. Out of which 127 (23%) were found to have myopia. Males were 59(46.5%) while
females were 68(53.5%. Questionnaires were then distributed to each of them to know the
risk factors for their myopia. Data collected was analyzed using Statistical Package for
Social Science (SPSS) VERSION 25 and adjusted odds ratio values for all risk factors were
estimated. Their age ranges from 5-15 years with a mean of 10.06 (SD= +/-2.35). Males
with a mean age of 10.12 (SD=+/-2.47) and females with a mean of 10.01 (SD=+/-2.26)
Children within the age range of 5-10 years (n=71, 55.9%) were more myopic than children
within 11-15 years (n=56, 44.1%). There was a significant association between age and
myopia (p
