Abstract

This investigated the Awareness and Utilization of PEDs among welders in Enugu North Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria. A cross-sectional descriptive survey research design was used and a sample size of 100 welders participated in the study. Descriptive statistics was used for the analysis. A questionnaire was used as the main research tool. Findings revealed that all participants (100%) were aware of PEDs. Awareness did not correspond to Utilization as only 66% had used PEDs. These findings also agree with that of Prabhu, et al., (2017) where 95% of the participants were aware but only 49% used them. Reasons for non-use include cost (38%), and lack of interest (58.8%). Findings also revealed that the majority of welders have suffered from flash burns as a result of non-use of PEDs (62%), the majority of those that use PEDs (78.8%) use them all the time they are welding, there are no socio-religio-cultural factors that influence the use of PEDs. The study emphasized an improved health education campaign for welders on the need for PEDs in the prevention of ocular injuries.
