THE DEVELOPMENT OF A DECENTRALIZED STUDENTS DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Abstract
This project, “THE DEVELOPMENT OF A DECENTRALIZED STUDENTS DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM” details and elaborates on the design and development of a database interaction-oriented web application for university students’ records. It was carried out by a group of 11 students in the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science, Benson Idahosa University. The study defines key concepts in the field of information processing and provides relevant background information, workflow impacts and implications of employed and alternative solutions. The development setup includes the popular full-stack framework NextJS which enabled the dynamic interactivity of the application in the court of server-side rendering and other features which abstracts core functionality from the application’s presentation as well as better SEO compatibility. The project utilizes PostgreSQL as the RDBMS managing database interactions accessed via servers provided by neon, a cloud service provider. The project deals on interaction with sensitive data, as such the software system is optimized for enhanced security: Its API routes screen every request made to the backend for CORS manipulation and CSRF attacks; Every page navigation triggers user authentication before data is transmitted to the client, effectively preventing page exploits and man-in-the-middle attacks. The methodologies adopted in development and project management are distinct, the development follows an object-oriented design approach while its lifecycle or project management technique is a combination of iterative waterfall and the V-model. The system is found to seamlessly facilitate the secure storage, modification, and retrieval of data in a decentralised access approach.
