Abstract

This study examines the flexural strength of hollow core concrete columns with different void diameters. The aim is to provide insights into factors influencing structural performance. The objectives were to design and cast structural grade concrete, prepare hollowed core columns, and conduct flexural tests. Concrete mix design and casting followed standard procedures. Four column samples (M20 grade) with dimensions L=500 mm, b=100 mm, and d=100 mm were tested: (1) solid control column, and three hollow columns with varying void diameters (20 mm, 32 mm, and 50 mm), representing 8.95%, 16.42%, and 29.85% void ratios, respectively. Flexural strength at 28 days decreased with increasing void diameter: 6.7 MPa (solid), 6.1 MPa (20 mm), 5.6 MPa (32 mm), and 4.7 MPa (50 mm). The findings indicate a significant reduction in flexural strength with increased void diameter. This research highlights the importance of optimizing hollow core design for enhanced structural performance. The results provide valuable insights for engineers and researchers in optimizing hollow core concrete structures.
