EXTRACTION, PRODUCTION, CHARACTERIZATION OF HAIR GROWTH OIL FROM THE AFRICAN OLIVE PLANT (CANARIUM SWCHEINFURTHII)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The percentage oil yield of 10.45% was obtained. Physicochemical properties of the extracted African olive seed oil were: Colour (dark yellowish brown), specific gravity (1.870), Saponification value (167.178mgKOH/100g oil), Acid Value (0.58mg/g), iodine value (76.14), oil), peroxide value (6.0meqKOH/g), and pH at 300C (4.2). The properties of the produced hair growth oil (HGO) were: pH (5.17), specific gravity at 600C (0.266), color ((light greenish brown) and of nice smelling aroma (fragrance) of vanilla. This study involves extraction, characterization, production of hair growth oil from African olive seed. The oil was extracted from the dried and ground pulp of Atili using soxhlet extractor method with hexane as extracting solvent at 60oC for 6hours. Physicochemical properties of the oil were determined using standard AOAC method (2017). The hair growth oil (HGO) was produced using cold method by mixing a given quantity of the carrier oil (African olive seed oil) with a given amount of peppermint essential oil, followed by addition of desired fragrance. The findings suggest that African olive seed oil can be used as a natural and effective treatment for promoting hair growth and preventing scalp infections.
