Abstract

This study assesses the effectiveness of social media as a tool for public enlightenment on the removal of fuel subsidies in Benue State. The study aimed to evaluate how well social media platforms inform and engage the public on this policy change. A survey research design was adopted, utilizing structured questionnaires to collect data from respondents. The study was anchored on the Agenda-Setting Theory and the Uses and Gratifications Theory, which provide a framework for understanding how social media influences public awareness and engagement. Findings reveal that social media is widely recognized as an effective platform for disseminating information and fostering discussions on fuel subsidy removal. However, public perception of government communication efforts remains mixed, with some citizens expressing skepticism about the clarity and transparency of the messages conveyed. The study concludes that while social media offers an accessible and interactive platform for public enlightenment, challenges such as misinformation, limited digital accessibility, and weak government engagement undermine its overall effectiveness. Based on these findings, the study recommends that the government enhance its use of social media by providing timely, clear, and accessible information on fuel subsidy policies. Strengthening engagement with the public and countering misinformation will further improve the effectiveness of social media as a tool for public enlightenment.
