EXPLORING MARKETING OPPORTUNITIES FOR SELECTED TOURISM DESTINATION IN BAUCHI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, BAUCHI STATE: STRATEGIES FOR GROWTH AND COMPETITIVENESS
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Tourism plays a growing role in economic diversification and local development in Nigeria, yet
marketing strategies at the grassroots level remain underexplored. This study examined tourism
marketing strategies in Bauchi Local Government Area, focusing on their effectiveness,
challenges, and sustainable improvements. The main objectives were to assess current strategies,
evaluate their effectiveness, and identify barriers and opportunities for sustainable growth. A
descriptive survey design was adopted, with 384 questionnaires distributed to tourists, tourism
operators, government officials, and cultural heritage managers. Of these, 312 responses were
retrieved, representing a response rate of 81.3 percent. Data were collected using a structured
Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed with descriptive statistics, including frequencies,
percentages, and mean scores. Findings revealed that while existing strategies, such as digital
promotion and highlighting cultural and historical attractions, increased awareness and interest,
their overall effectiveness was moderate. Challenges included poor infrastructure, weak
destination branding, limited adoption of digital tools, and inadequate collaboration between
stakeholders. Respondents recommended strengthening digital marketing, enhancing cultural
heritage promotion, improving infrastructure, and fostering stronger public–private partnerships.
The study concludes that addressing structural, technological, and institutional gaps is essential
to improve Bauchi’s tourism competitiveness. The findings provide insights for policymakers,
tourism operators, and local communities in shaping more effective and sustainable tourism
marketing strategies. Future research should explore digital marketing impacts, visitor
satisfaction, economic contributions, regional comparisons, and stakeholder collaboration.
