BACTERIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF WATER TANK IN IMT CAMPUS 3, ENUGU.
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Bacteriological examination of tank water in IMT, campus III was carried out. The most probable method was employed using MacConkey broth, nutrient agar, MacConkey agar. and Eosin methylene blue agar, Gram-staining and Biochemical test was carried out to identify the bacterial organisms while presumptive test were used to indicate the coliform presence in well water. A total of 10 samples of well water were analyzed, the total bacterial mean count was 53cfu/ml. The highest bacterial organism isolated was Pseudomonas aeruginosa with bacterial mean count of 21cfu/ml. This was followed by Escherichia coli with bacterial mean count of 18 cfu/ml. The next is Klebsiella spp with bacteria mean count of 14cfu/ml. well water are contaminate with pathogenic organisms which include Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp and Pseudomonas spp, these organisms are potentially hazardous of tank water in IMT, campus 3, and could be the sources or route of transmission of gastrointestinal disease and other disease or infection like hepatitis commonly reported by the health authorities in the area. Therefore is is recommended that adequate water disinfection and treatment of all storage water tanks is needed to prevent any adverse effect to end users of the water supplies. Also Water tanks should washed periodically to make the tank to be of any material that can harbor and favour the growth of bacteria organisms.
