DEVELOPMENT OF AN ENHANCED PAYMENT GATEWAY. CASE STUDY: ECOMMERCE IN NIGERIA BUSINESS
Abstract
The growth of e-commerce in Nigeria is often impeded by challenges in online payment processing, including security vulnerabilities and complex integration for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This project addresses these issues by developing a secure, functional proof-of-concept electronic payment gateway tailored for the Nigerian market.
Using a Waterfall development model, the system was built with a B2C framework and a technology stack that includes PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Core to its design are advanced security protocols such as SSL/TLS encryption, a simulation of RSA cryptography and tokenization, and anti-fraud measures like billing address verification. These features adhere to the core principles of the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).
The prototype successfully processes simulated credit and debit card transactions, featuring an e-commerce storefront, a secure checkout process, and an administrative dashboard. This work proves the viability of a secure and customizable payment solution, offering a valuable reference model for Nigerian SMEs and contributing to the advancement of secure software development.
