Abstract

ABSTRACT Examination malpractice remains one of the most persistent challenges facing educational institutions in Nigeria, undermining academic integrity and devaluing certificates. This study investigates the application of biometric technology in examination control, using Abia State Polytechnic Aba as a case study. The research focuses on the implementation of fingerprint-based authentication systems to verify student identity during examinations. A descriptive research design was adopted, and data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and system observations. The findings reveal that biometric systems significantly reduce impersonation, improve accuracy in student verification, and enhance overall examination security. However, challenges such as high implementation costs, technical issues, and resistance to change were also identified. The study concludes that biometric technology is a viable and effective solution for examination control and recommends its adoption across tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
