THE ROLE OF ACADEMIC LIBRARIES IN PROMOTING CONTINUING EDUCATION IN UNIVERSITY OF CALABAR, CROSS RIVER STATE, CALABAR
Abstract
The study examines the Role of Academic Libraries in Promoting Continuing
Education. Continuing education plays a vital role in the development of individuals,
allowing them to acquire new knowledge, skills, and competencies beyond their initial
academic qualifications. However, individuals often face numerous challenges in
accessing and engaging in continuing education programs. This study delves into the
various strategies and initiatives employed by academic libraries to promote continuing
education. It explores the diverse services offered by libraries, such as the level of
awareness of patrons and use of library materials in continuing education, the
availability of library materials and promoting continues education. The target
population was 5,736 postgraduate students, 85 academic and 25 non-academic staff
library users. Three research questions and three hypotheses was formulated for this
study. Furthermore, the independent variable in this hypothesis is user perception of
accessibility of academic library resources, while the dependent variable is their level
of patronage. The appropriate statistical analysis technique adopted to test this
hypothesis is Pearson Product Moment Correlation analysis, each hypotheses is restated
in the null form. Academic libraries are significant catalysts in fostering continuing
education. This study emphasizes the value of academic libraries as crucial partners in
promoting lifelong learning and calls for further research to enhance the understanding
of their evolving role in the rapidly changing educational landscape.
