EVALUATION OF ETHANOL LEAF EXTRACT OF ANDROGRAPHISPANICULATAON ADIPOSE TISSUE OXIDATIVE STRESS BIOMARKERS IN STREPTOZOTOCIN-INDUCED DIABETIC WISTAR RATS
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This research was aimed to evaluate theeffect of ethanol extract of Andrographispaniculata on serum insulin and glucose in streptozotocin-induced diabetic Wistar rats. A total of twenty-five (25) Wistar rats were used for the experiment. These were grouped into normal control and diabetic induced groups. The diabetic rats were further grouped into four with five rats each. Group 1: normal control animals fed with standard rat pellets and tap water for 21 days.Group II: (negative control) diabetic control animals induced with streptozotocin and daily oral administration of 0.2% twin 80 for 21 days. Group III: induced diabetes with streptozotocin and treated with metformin (20mg/kg body weight) orally for 21 days. Group IV: induced diabetes with streptozotocin and administered orally 250mg/kg body weight A.paniculata ethanol leaf extract daily for 21 days. Group V: induced diabetes with streptozotocin and administered orally 500mg/kg body weight Andrographispaniculata ethanol leaf extract daily for 21days. The results revealed non-significant (P>0.05) activities of SOD, CAT and GSH among the groups. There were significant higher MDA levels but lower GPx activity in diabetic control when compared with those in normal control. Diabetic rats treated with 20 mg/kg bwt. Metformin, 250 and 500mg/kg bwt. extracts of A. paniculatashowed non-significant changes in MDA level and GPx activities amongst the groups and when compared with those in normal control; But significantly lowered in MDA and higher in GPx activities when compared with those in diabetic control. The observed results suggested that the extract of A. paniculata may has a protective effect in mitigating diabetes.
