Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was conducted to determine the quality of water stored in GP tanks in Calabar Metropolis. Thirty (30) water samples were collected from 15 GP tanks in 15 different locations. The water samples were investigated for their physicochemical and microbiological characteristics. Temperature, pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand (BOD), chloride, nitrite, and ammonia were determined. Total plate count (TPC), faecal count (FCC), total coliform count (TCC) and total fungal count (TFC) were determined by standard plate method. Identification of organisms was by colonial, morphological and biochemical characteristics. Results showed that temperature ranging from 23.1oC to 25.6oC, pH 6.00 to 8.40, conductivity 38.2 to 38.7umho/cm, DO 49.54 to 57.76 umho/cm2, BOD 2.61 to 5.22 mg/l, chloride 29.72 to 34.08 mg/l, nitrite 10ppm and ammonia
