IMPACT OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY ON ACCOUNTING PRACTICES IN NIGERIA
Abstract
Abstract
This study examines the impact of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on accounting practices in Nigeria. The increasing adoption of ICT tools has significantly transformed traditional accounting systems, enhancing efficiency, accuracy, and timeliness in financial reporting. The research explores how digital technologies such as accounting software, cloud computing, and automated systems have improved data processing, record-keeping, and decision-making processes within organizations.
The study adopts a descriptive research design, utilizing both primary and secondary data sources. Findings reveal that ICT has greatly reduced human error, increased productivity, and improved transparency in accounting operations. However, challenges such as high implementation costs, cybersecurity risks, inadequate infrastructure, and lack of technical expertise still hinder full adoption in some sectors.
The study concludes that while ICT has a positive and significant impact on accounting practices in Nigeria, there is a need for continuous training, investment in infrastructure, and effective regulatory frameworks to maximize its benefits. Recommendations are provided to enhance ICT integration in the Nigerian accounting sector.
