EXPLORING MOTIVATORS AND IMPLICATION OF CHILD TRAFFIKING IN BAUCHI LGA, BAUCHI STATE - NIGERIAGEN
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Child trafficking remains a pervasive socio-criminal challenge with profound implications for the well-being of children and the stability of communities. This study explores the motivators and implications of child trafficking in Bauchi Local Government Area, Bauchi State, Nigeria. The research investigates the socio-economic, cultural, and environmental factors that contribute to the prevalence of child trafficking, including poverty, unemployment, broken homes, peer influence, inadequate parental supervision, and the demand for cheap labour and exploitation. The study also examines the consequences of trafficking on victims, such as physical and psychological trauma, loss of educational opportunities, stigmatization, and disruption of family and community cohesion.A mixed-method research design was employed, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data were collected from a sample of community members, local leaders, law enforcement officers, and social workers through structured questionnaires, interviews, and focus group discussions. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative responses were thematically examined to capture deeper insights into the lived experiences and perspectives of participants. Findings reveal that economic hardship and weak law enforcement are the leading motivators of child trafficking in the area, while cultural beliefs and ignorance of child rights further perpetuate the practice. The implications are multidimensional, affecting not only the victims but also the social and economic stability of the community. The study recommends intensified public awareness campaigns, stronger law enforcement measures, empowerment of vulnerable families through skill acquisition and microcredit schemes, and collaborative efforts between government agencies, NGOs, and community stakeholders to curb child trafficking in Bauchi LGA.
