Abstract

This study critically examined the causes and effects of political apathy in Nigerian politics, with a focus on the systemic factors driving disengagement and the implications for democratic governance. Employing a non-experimental descriptive research design, data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to 67 purposively selected respondents, including politicians, political scientists, analysts, and government officials. Descriptive analysis revealed that political apathy in Nigeria is primarily fueled by distrust in political leaders, widespread corruption, electoral violence, poor governance, and a lack of political education. The study found that this apathy significantly undermines democratic institutions by enabling the rise of unqualified leaders, eroding electoral legitimacy, and weakening civic accountability. Although the government has made efforts to address political disengagement, such as youth inclusion programs, civic education, and voter registration drives, and these initiatives are often viewed as inadequate due to their limited scope and inconsistent implementation. The study concludes that political apathy in Nigeria is a deeply rooted issue requiring comprehensive reforms focused on transparency, leadership accountability, and civic empowerment. Recommendations include strengthening anti-corruption mechanisms, enforcing electoral security, and fostering inclusive political education to restore public trust and promote active democratic participation.
