ANALYSIS OF CHILD ABUSE IN AMMA DARKO’S FACELESS AND LAWRENCE DARMANI’S GRIEF CHILD
Abstract
Child abuse comes about as a result of a number of causal factors. These factors are very common place and not far-fetched. They range from individual, family, social and community levels. It is believed that people who tend to have a personal history of abusive childhood often grow into child abusers. Also the major factors that give rise to child abuse on the family front are believed to include unstable parent-child relationships and parental conflicts. The study provides an Analysis of Child Abuse in Amma Darko’s Faceless And Lawrence Darmani’s Grief Child reading the novels as critique of African patriarchy. The work establishes the fact that the phenomenon of child abuse is prevalent in Africa in general, and in Ghana in particular. The theoretical framework of the study is based on environmental theory and cognitive theory. These theories re-examine and explain the effect and aspect of child abuse on the society. The theories also evaluate issues of poor parenting and belief about child upbringing. Also, the theory highlights the degree of injustice children suffer due to their parental condition which pushes them to intense abuse. The study further examines the different ways in which thematic expression, styles and literary techniques are used. Analyses of literature such as parental negligence, streatism and environmental measure to eliminate child abuse were also discussed. Finally, the study gives a conclusion based on the two books that child abuse a casual factor that affect the community and the society at large. Thus, proper measures as stated in the chapter should be adopted in other to curb such anomalies in the society.
