PRODUCTION OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF GEARS USING 3D-PRINTER FOR DEMONSTRATIONAL PURPOSES
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This project focuses on the production of worm, bevel, rack and pinion, and spur gears using 3D printing technology for demonstrational purposes. Gears are essential components in many mechanical systems, and their design and functionality can be complex to understand in theoretical contexts. The goal of this project is to create accurate, scaled-down models of these gear types using 3D printing to facilitate visual and hands-on learning in educational and training environments. The methodology involves designing gear models using CAD software, ensuring proper gear ratios, dimensions, and tolerances are maintained. The models are then fabricated using a Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printer with materials such as PLA or ABS to provide both durability and precision. The gears produced are tested for fit and functionality, demonstrating basic principles like torque transmission, gear meshing, and rotational motion. Results obtained from this project are indicated in table 4.1 to 4.9 and Figure 4.1 to 4.9. Table 4.1 to 4.6 and Figure 4.1 to 4.6 show that at 0 infill to 100 infill the speed of printing increases the time of printing decreases. Table 4.7 and Figure 4.7 shows that the total time of printing increases as the percentage infill increases. This means that the percentage infill is directly proportional to the time of printing a spur gear. Table 4.8 - 4.9 and Figure 4.8 – 4.9 the increase in the speed of printing also increases the total line of printing, thus showing that the total line of printing is directly proportional to the speed of printing. This project successfully highlights the potential of 3D printing in prototyping and education by providing cost-effective, customizable models. The gears can be easily replicated or modified, making them an ideal solution for teaching mechanical engineering concepts. The use of 3D printing also reduces production time and costs compared to traditional manufacturing methods. The outcome of this project contributes to the growing use of additive manufacturing in educational applications, offering a practical approach to learning gear mechanics.
