Abstract

Oxidative stress has been known as a key factor of many disorders affecting human beings. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) attack vital biomolecules, weakening their functioning, thus exacerbating diseases. To attenuate oxidative stress-associated diseases a novel approaches of antioxidant therapies have been anticipated. Antioxidants have the potential to inhibit the propagation and formation of ROS. Emilia sonchifolia is a medicinal plant, used by the local people for the treatment of various ailments. The study aimed to evaluate the antioxidative activity, total phenolic and flavonoid contents of methanol extract and fractions of Emilia sonchifolia. Furthermore, antioxidant activity was measured using 2, 2 diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay and Ferric reducing antioxidant powder (FRAP) assay. The DPPH assay measure the ability of plants extract to scavenge free radicals generated by DPPH compound. In DPPH Ascorbic acid and Ethylacetate exhibit the highest antioxidant activity at (99%) Followed by butanol at (70%), then Aqueous (43%), Hexane (42%) and Dichloromethane (37%). Therefore in DPPH, the activity decrease as the concentration increases because at lower absorbance indicates higher antioxidant activity. In FRAP assay, the highest reducing power was exhibited by Ethylacetate (1.050nm) followed by Dichloromethane (0.918nm), Butanol (0.716nm), Hexane (0.643nm), Ascorbic acid (0.626nm) and Aqueous (0.569nm). Here, activity was observed to increase as the concentration increases. Phenolies and flavonoids are secondary metabolites and are widely distributed in various plants. They also display anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial properties and protection against chronic disease by reduction of oxidative stress influenced by free radicals. Thus, methanol extract, and fractions of Emilia sonchifolia leaves mainly contain vital phytochemical and shows good antioxidant activity.
