Abstract

ABSTRACT Gender discrimination remains one of the most significant barriers to achieving inclusive and sustainable community development, especially in rural areas of Nigeria. This study examines the effects of gender discrimination on the achievement of community development in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State. The research investigates how cultural norms, economic inequalities, lack of education, and patriarchal structures hinder the active participation of women in community development initiatives. The study adopts a descriptive survey design, drawing data from both primary and secondary sources. Structured questionnaires and interviews were used to collect information from selected respondents, including community leaders, women groups, and local government officials. The findings reveal that gender discrimination significantly limits women's access to decision-making positions, economic empowerment, and leadership opportunities, thereby impeding the overall progress of community development. It was observed that traditional beliefs and male-dominated governance structures marginalize women's voices, leading to poor representation in policy formulation and project implementation. The study concludes that sustainable community development cannot be achieved without the full inclusion of both genders in planning, decision-making, and implementation processes. Based on these findings, the study recommends the enforcement of gender equality laws, increased educational opportunities for women, sensitization programs to challenge discriminatory cultural norms, and the introduction of gender-sensitive policies at all levels of governance. Ensuring equal participation of men and women will foster equitable growth, social harmony, and holistic community development in Arochukwu and beyond.
