COMBINED EFFECTS OF 10%RAW SESAME SEEDS (SESAMUM INDICUM ) DIET AND TURMERIC (CURCUMA LONGA ) ON LIVER FUNCTION IN STREPTOZOTOCIN-INDUCED DIABETIC RATS
Abstract
Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by persistent hyperglycemia, which often leads to liver dysfunction and other systemic complications. This study investigated the combined effects of a 10% raw sesame seeds (Sesamum indicum) diet and turmeric (Curcuma longa) on liver function in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. A total of experimental rats were divided into different groups: normal control, diabetic control, diabetic rats treated with sesame seeds, diabetic rats treated with turmeric, and diabetic rats treated with a combination of sesame seeds and turmeric. Diabetes was induced using streptozotocin, after which treatment was administered for a specified period.
Biochemical parameters including liver enzymes—alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP)—as well as total protein and bilirubin levels were assessed to evaluate liver function. Histopathological examinations of liver tissues were also conducted.
Results showed that diabetic rats exhibited significant elevations in liver enzyme activities and alterations in liver architecture compared to the normal control group. Treatment with sesame seeds and turmeric, both individually and in combination, resulted in a significant reduction in liver enzyme levels and improved liver histology. Notably, the combined treatment demonstrated a more pronounced hepatoprotective effect compared to single treatments.
In conclusion, the combined administration of 10% raw sesame seeds diet and turmeric exhibits synergistic effects in improving liver function and mitigating hepatic damage in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. These findings suggest potential therapeutic benefits of these natural products in the management of diabetes-related liver complications.
If you want, I can also help you adjust it to match your exact experimental design (duration, number of rats, dosages, etc.) or make it more technical for journal submission.
