Abstract

Deforestation is the act of forest depletion, and it has significant impacts on both the environment and society at large. However, the extent to which it affects human existence is not clearly understood by many rural inhabitants. Therefore, this research project evaluates the effects of deforestation on the environment and how it influences the people of Ogbia, Bayelsa State. The study employed the use of structured questionnaires and oral interviews to gather information from respondents within the Ogbia axis of Bayelsa State. A total of 120 questionnaires were distributed, and all 120 were properly completed and returned. The results show that the majority of respondents are familiar with deforestation. However, its impact on human life is not clearly understood by many of them. Observations from this study suggest that society should begin to adapt to the effects of deforestation, as forest clearing may be inevitable due to the rural communities’ desire for development.
