Abstract

This study, titled “Journalists as Political Actors: A Narrative Analysis of Media–Politics Relations in Bauchi State,” examines the complex relationship between journalists and politicians within the political environment of Bauchi, Nigeria. Guided by the Political Economy of Media Theory, the study investigates how political affiliations, ownership structures, and commercialization influence journalistic practice, objectivity, and public trust. A qualitative narrative analysis was employed, using semi-structured interviews and documentary review with fifteen (15) purposively selected journalists from print, broadcast, and online platforms in Bauchi State. Data were analysed thematically following Braun and Clarke’s (2021) framework. Findings revealed that journalists in Bauchi play dual roles as informants and political participants due to economic pressures, ownership interference, and political patronage. These factors compromise editorial independence and erode media credibility, leading to declining public trust. Nonetheless, a few journalists were found to uphold professional ethics and maintain objectivity despite political and financial constraints. The study concludes that media– politics relations in Bauchi State are characterised by mutual dependence rather than autonomy. Strengthening journalistic ethics, improving welfare, and reducing political influence are essential for restoring media integrity and promoting democracy.
