MEDIA COVERAGE OF MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES AND ITS IMPACT ON MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS/PERCEPTIONS
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Mental health is a significant public health issue in Nigeria, yet stigma and low awareness impede access to care. This research, titled The Impact of Media Coverage on Mental Health Awareness in Nigeria, examines how traditional and digital media influence public understanding and attitudes toward mental health. The study aims to assess the impact of media on knowledge, evaluate perceptions among Abuja youths, and determine media's role in raising awareness. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the research involved surveys of 400 youths and interviews with media professionals, collecting data via structured questionnaires. Findings indicate that media coverage significantly enhances awareness, with many respondents viewing mental health reporting as accurate and impactful in reducing stigma. However, challenges such as inadequate journalist training and cultural misconceptions were identified. While media positively influences help-seeking behaviors and public discourse, its effectiveness is limited by issues in depth, frequency, and framing of coverage. The study concludes that media is a powerful tool for awareness but requires improvements in reporting standards and training. Recommendations include integrating mental health communication into policy, strengthening journalist training, fostering partnerships, and utilizing digital platforms to engage youth audiences effectively.
