EVALUATION OF PHYSIOCHEMICAL CHARACTERISTIC OF HEAVY METALS OF STREAM FROM UMOGBO AGU ENUGU EZIKE IGBO-EZE NORTH L.G.A ENUGU STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The physicochemical properties and heavy metal contents of Nkpoiyi Ngwaka Umu- ogboAgu were assessed in this work. Heavy metals were analyzed using Agilent FS240 Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). For the analysis, water samples were collected from three locations: upstream, midstream and downstream in each stream. Analysis of physicochemical parameters such as pH, Temperature, Turbidity, Electrical Conductivity (EC), Total dissolved solids(TS), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) were done using standard analytical methods. Spectrophotometric method was used in the determination of the nutrient load assay; nitrates, phosphates and sulphates were assayed. The average temperature values of the stream were found to be 32.78 C ± 3.87 °C for Nkpoiyi Ngwaka Umu-ogbo Agu stream. The average pH values for the stream for Nkpoiyi Ngwaaka Umu-ogbo Agu streams respectively. According to WHO guidelines, this result showed that the pH of Nkpaiyi Ngwaka Umu-ogbo Agu exceed the acceptable limits and deemed more acidic and therefore can pose some health and environmental risks. In addition, the results of the physicochemical parameters: Turbidity, TS, TSS, TDS, BOD, COD, chlorides, nitrates, sulphates, phosphates, and heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, and Pb) were all found to be within the permissible limits of WHO guidelines for drinking water except for Fe which exceeded the WHO limits.
