Abstract

ABSTRACT Twenty seven Albino Wister rat (rattus norvegicus) where studied to investigate the effect of crude extract from edible mollusks on some biochemical parameters. Fresh extract from edible mollusks (T. fuscatus, T. coronata and E. radiata) obtained from Watt Market were administered to rat through feeding. The rats were grouped into three, control, low dose and high dose and they received (LD-10mg protein/ml and HD-52mg/mL respectively) of extract. The control were feed with rat chow and water ad libitum. After 21days administration the animals were sacrificed and analysed. From the results, the estimated protein content for rock snail, periwinkle and clam extracts were 9.77 ±0.41, 15.22 ±0.18 and 25.68 ±0.55 mg protein/ml respectively. The results also showed that the three extracts had profound impact on serum electrolytes. The serum levels of potassium, calcium and bicarbonate were increased significantly by each of the extracts while the levels of sodium and chloride were decreased. Interestingly, the total protein and globulin were significantly increased by the extracts, while albumin was not altered, as the extracts were found to be highly proteinous.
