PALYNOLOGICAL ANALYSIS, AGE DETERMINATION, AND PALAEOENVIRONMENTAL RECONSTRUCTION OF WELLS A-1 AND A-15, EASTERN DAHOMEY BASIN, SOUTHWESTERN NIGERIA
Abstract
AbstractThis study utilized palynomorph distribution from the A-1 and A-15 wells to determine their age and reconstruct their depositional environments. Ten samples were subjected to standard palynological preparation and analysis. Results from well A-1 revealed abundant and diverse dinoflagellate cysts alongside common pollen, spores, and diatom frustules. In contrast, well A-15 yielded poor to moderate records of pollen and spores, with few dinoflagellate cysts.Well A-1 was dated as Maastrichtian (Late Cretaceous) to Thanetian (Late Paleocene) based on species such as Cyathidites minor, Longapertites vaneendenburgi, and Senegalinium sp.. Well A-15 was assigned a Maastrichtian (Late Cretaceous) to Danian (Paleocene) age. Two biozones were established: the Retidiporites magdalenensis - Senegalinium sp. assemblage zone in A-1 and the Longapertites sp. - Echitriporites trianguliformis assemblage zone in A-15. The study indicates that paleodepositional environments ranged from transitional-mixed marine in A-1 to predominantly brackish-shallow marine in A-15.
