DETERMINATION OF THE PHYTOCHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF THE ETHANOL EXTRACT OF TETRAPLEURA TETRAPTERA DRY FRUIT
Abstract
This study focuses on the phytochemical analysis of ethanol extract from
Tetrapleura tetraptera fruit collected from Enugu South LGA, Enugu State. The
fruits were washed, dried, and pulverized, and 20g of the sample was macerated
in 100ml of distilled water. After 24 hours, the extract was concentrated using a
water bath. Qualitative analysis identified alkaloids, tannins, saponins, flavones,
phenols, terpenoids, triterpenoids, cardiac glycosides, coumarins, and
carotenoids, contributing to the plant's medicinal properties. Quantitative
analysis revealed alkaloids (4.0%), tannins (0.288 mg/L), saponins (12.0%),
flavonoids (31.0%), flavones and flavonols (0.316 mg/L), cardiac glycosides
(0.0214 mg/L), and terpenoids (5.203 mg/L). These phytochemicals exhibit strong
antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and potential immunomodulatory properties,
suggesting benefits against oxidative stress, microbial infections, and
inflammation. Further research is recommended to isolate active compounds and
validate their pharmacological applications for clinical use.
