EFFECT OF BRIDELIA TOMENTOSA LEAF EXTRACT ON KIDNEY PATHOLOGY OF STZ INDUCED DIABETES OF ALBINO RATS
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from insufficient insulin production or action. Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes in albino rats is a commonly used model for studying diabetic complications, including diabetic nephropathy, which is a leading cause of kidney damage. Bridelia tomentosa, a medicinal plant used in traditional medicine, is known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and nephroprotective properties. This study investigates the effect of Bridelia tomentosa extract on kidney pathology in STZ-induced diabetic albino rats, focusing on its potential protective effects against diabetes-induced renal damage. Experimental analysys were analyse using standard methods. Result after 14 days of treatment, shows that for creatinine level the normal control 0.80 ± 0.03, the positive control 0.85 ± 0.03, the experimental animals treated with high dose 0.90 ±0.04, medium dose 0.95 ± 0.05 and low dose 1.00 ± 0.05 shows no significant difference at (p < 0.05) BUN levels were not significantly different compared to the normal control 10 ± 0.50, positive control 10.50 ± 0.70, and the experimental animals treated with the extract respectively at (p < 0.05). The GFR levels were not significantly different at (p< 0.05) compared to the normal control 10. 0 ± 5. 00, positive control 55.00 ± 4.50, and all the experimental groups treated with the extract. This study demonstrates that Bridelia tomentosa extract has significant nephroprotective effects in STZ-induced diabetic albino rats. The extract improved kidney function by reducing serum creatinine and BUN levels and alleviating histopathological changes in the kidneys.
