MAPPING OF REFUSE DUMPS AND ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS IN ABA, ABIA STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Improper waste disposal has hecome a growing environmental concern in Aha, Abia State, due to rapid urbanization and poor waste management infrastructure. This project aims to sdentify and map major refuse dumpsites within the city and muss their environmental impacts, particularly on soil, water, air quality, and public health
Using GPS and GIS technology, key dumpsites were located and spatially analyzed to determine their proximity to residential areas, markets, muds, and water bodies. Soil and water samples were collected around selected dumpsites and tested for physical, chemical and biological contaminants, including pl, heavy metals (such as lead, undevium, and ziekt and microbial presence.
Findings reveal that most dumpstes are unregulated and located close to densely populated areas. Soil and groundwater around these sites showed elevated levels of pollutants above WHO safe limits, posing risks to agriculture, potatile water supply, and human health. High microbial loads, including harmful pathogens, were alto detected, suggriting a link to increased disease incidence among nearby residents
This project highlights the urgent need for improved waste management systems in Aba. It recommends the establishment of sanitary landfills, environmental monitoring, puhlic awareness campaigns, and the use of phytoremediation techniques to rehabilitate affected areas
