Abstract

Abstract This study examines the influence of mass media laws and ethical standards on journalism practice in Rivers State, Nigeria. The media plays a vital role in shaping public opinion, promoting accountability, and sustaining democracy. However, the practice of journalism is guided by legal frameworks and ethical codes which regulate professional conduct. This research adopts a descriptive survey design to assess how journalists in Rivers State perceive and comply with these laws and ethical principles. Data were collected through questionnaires administered to practicing journalists across selected media houses. Findings reveal that while awareness of media laws and ethics is relatively high, challenges such as political interference, economic pressure, and weak enforcement mechanisms affect compliance. The study concludes that strengthening institutional frameworks and promoting continuous professional training will enhance ethical journalism practice. Recommendations are provided to improve adherence and professionalism in the media industry.
