IMPACT OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS ON SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS IN GEOMETRY AND SOLID SHAPES IN KWANDE LOCAL GOVERNMENT OF BENUE STATE.
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigated impact of instructional material on Senior Secondary School Students Academic Achievement in Geometry and Solid shapes in Kwande Local Government. The research was a quasi- experimental study of randomized groups of male and female Senior Secondary school students post t-test design. A simple random sampling technique was used to select a sample of 60 students comprising of 30 males and 30 females. Purposive sampling technique was used to select Senior Secondary Schools 2 Students for the study. The students were then assigned to control and experimental groups randomly. The experimental group was taught using instructional materials while the control group was taught without instructional material. Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT) was used for data collection. The data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions and ttest statistic for testing the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. Finding revealed that use of instructional materials enhanced students academic performance positively. Further result showed that there was no significant difference between male and female students taught mathematics using instructional materials. It was then recommended that Mathematics teachers should use instructional materials in teaching mathematics to enhance learning effectiveness of students. Where the standard instructional materials are lacking, they can improvise, school owners should establish mathematics laboratories as it is done in the case of other science subjects, in all secondary schools. This will facilitate the use of mathematics during teaching towards improving students performance in mathematics among others that teachers should be encouraged to use instructional materials in teaching mathematics to improve students comprehension and hence achievement.
